I finally broke down and bought a decent camera for the trip. Decided i wasn't going out there and not be able to bring some memories back with me.
I hope i can get aclimated to the altitude quickly.
Born and raised at 900 ft above see level, camp is going to be at around 8200 ft or so. They tell me it should take 3 days to get so that your not winded walking out of the tent?

Been doing cardio like a mad man and some weight training (mostly squats and box steps) in prep, hope its enuf

:s_hi:Gps man good luck on the upcoming hunt. You are gonna have a blast and some of the best one on one time with your son thats for sure. Glad to see you are taking a camera to be able to retell the stories that yall did together. When i did my trip to Wyoming several years ago i documented our trip out there and of course the campfire rituals and parts of the hunts for the mulies and speed goats and everyone enjoy the trip and campfire parts as much if not more than the hunts, so vid and snap pic all thru the trip. You are right about having to get use to the altitude also, had a issue with that too. Good luck on the upcoming adventure and have a blast!:cool2:

weather forecasts

Is there any websites that will provide weather forecast at elevation ? Everything i have found has been centered around population centers. Exactly were we will not be..

9 days to go

gspman- Idk if you have ever hunted Idaho or that area.. But i did a little hunting there for about 4yrs.... Hope you don't mind advise... But hunting Idaho... what always worked best for me is covering ground scouting as much as pos and get the HELL away from any atv or any other kind of road! Now that area you are hunting from what i have heard you have a decent chance of getting a white tail too... I think your tag is good for either one i am about 90 % sure on that one... But you should look it up... Last piece of advice big mule deer will be high and along way from roads...

I cant wait for pics/vids/lies i mean hunting stories !!! LOL

Oh also i have a buddy from there i can see if he has any good spots you could hit... Or at least some places to start.... I hope i didn't offend you cuz i am just trying to help out a fellow grizz brother !!!!

Go to the National Weather Service website and the have spot forecast for all of the US. You just drag the cursor over the area that you will be. Good luck to you. My daughter and I will be in Wyoming in 9 days for deer and antelope hunt. I love this time of year...

Griz4x4

No offense taken, I am a complete nube in Idaho. This will be my sons 3'd year.
There are going to be a few others joining our camp just before opening day of elk season.
My intial game plan
I was planning on getting as high as i can as early as i can on the atv, then basically use that as my spike camp. The trails i am told are marked and are the same used for any motor vehicle. I have not been able to find a map ahead of time though... But this is also dependant on weather, we are going to be there early (1st week of mule deer). If the weather changes and the others can't get pickups to where we are, there might be elk right around the bend...
Never know about these things, i have also heard that there is some guiding going on there and they have a habit of "driving animals to there clients" and one should position themselves to intercept or get beat out of an opportunity.

Whitetails...1st i heard of that, i believe thats a seperate deer tag, Ido know i can forfeit for a black bear or a lion though with my B tag. Not interested in that though.
Alot of moose in the area, my son has pics of those.

Any advice you can through my way, i will gladly accept with gratitude !!

gsp Ok brother i just wanted to make sure you didn't take offense.... Some times on paper things can be taken out of context. But anyway i like your plan about getting the grizz up and then hiking it from there. I messaged my buddy and will forward any info i get to you. But about the tags i know that my buddy passed on a BIG whitetail cuz he wasn't sure and he looked it up and found out he could have shot it with the tag he had. But i think it would be worth your time to look it up because i hear there are some big whitetail buck deers in that area.i think you could email the Idaho game dept and they could give you an answer. I not 100% but in my experience snow that early is few and far between.... But anything can happen!!! One more piece of info... If it starts snowing and your r in a pick up high on the mtn get it off ASAP i know ppl who have had to leave their pick up and come back in the spring to recover it because it was covered in snow...

As far as elk go sounds like a good plan. But the best plan IMO is to cover lots of ground !

BTW do you have a wolf tag???

I definetly going to tru to not get snowed in, got a big truck, 4wd and chains all around. But will get me thru alot of nasty.... But if it starts coming down hard...Its hard to call, the problem as i see it arises in the low spots not the high spots.
I am trying to get set up with radio stations, doubt i will have cell service unless I am hi up. I have a trial membership with on star, It will be interesting if I can use there service as well.

Got to be aware of your surroundings, We will be fine no matter what happens weather wise if we can get some advance warnings.

Does the national weather service post bulletins for weather events affecting the high ground in your neck of the woods.?????

Let me see if this helps you.

Go to this link: NOAA's National Weather Service

Click on the area of the state that you are going to be in: National Weather Service - NWS Pocatello

I chose SE Idaho for you.

Zoom in to your location by clicking on the map to zoom in on where you are at: 7-Day Forecast for Latitude 43.47°N and Longitude 111.65°W (Elev. 5996 ft)

I chose the area about in the middle of the Tex Creek WMA. Yo can move the cursor to other areas of the map to fine tune your forecast. You can also zoom in and use a satellite view to be even more precise.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
